MUSIC - BROAD GENERAL EDUCATION

Broad General Education - S1 to 3 Music 

 

Pupils will begin to develop skills on a variety of instruments in S1, including, keyboard, tuned percussion, guitar, ukulele, drum kit and voice.  Music literacy skills will be developed and pupils will learn to read and write music notation.  Topics covered include: Instruments of the Orchestra, Scottish Music and World Music. Within these topics, pupils will develop listening skills, performing skills and composing skills.   Homework tasks are based on literacy skills development and topic research. The use of technology for composition is embedded across all years. 

 

In S2, pupils will choose two instruments to develop further and will be involved in group and solo performing.  Topics covered include: The history and development of Baroque music, the history and development of Pop music and an Interdisciplinary project on the Holocaust.  Homework tasks are based on literacy skills development and topic research.


S3 allows pupils to further develop their skills on two chosen instruments and introduces topics on Vocal music, Classical music and Scottish Vocal music.   Compositional skills are further developed and pupils begin to build a portfolio of compositions.   In S3, pupils begin to prepare for S4 National courses by performing in front of an audience to gain confidence and also to be part of an audience and reflect on what a good performance looks and sounds like.
