THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

Senior Phase - National 4

 

There are a number of learning pathways students can take during their senior phase based on their personal interests and requirements for further education.

 

National 4 Maths

 

National 4 develops key knowledge and skills required to progress to National 5 level in fifth year or sixth year. Algebra is an essential part of the National 4 course. At National 4, students will need to pass three unit assessments and a final course assessment, the Added Value unit. All of the assessments at National 4 are internally assessed.

 

National 4 Mathematics is studied over one year and explores the following three units.

 

1.             Expressions and Formulae

2.             Relationships

3.             Numeracy

 

National 4 Life skills Maths

 

National 4 life skills develops key knowledge and skills required to progress to National 5 level in fifth year or sixth year.  Algebra is not part part of the National 4 life skills course. Instead there is a much bigger emphasis on finance with regards to wages and tax calculation, hire purchase deals, loans/mortgages, applications of percentages.

 

At National 4, students will need to pass three unit assessments and a final course assessment, the Added Value unit. All of the assessments at National 4 are internally assessed.

 

National 4 Mathematics is studied over one year and explores the following three units.

 

Senior Phase - National 5 Maths

 

National 5 maths develops key knowledge and skills required to progress to Higher level in fifth year or sixth year. Algebra is an essential part of the National 5 course. At National 5, students will need to pass three unit assessments as well as a Numeracy assessment. The final grade for National 5 Maths is dependant entirely on the exam performance. It is recommended students achieve an A/B pass at National 5 level to allow progress to Higher level the following year.

 

National 5 Mathematics is studied over one year and explores the following four units.

 

1.             Expressions and Formulae

2.             Relationships

3.             Applications

4.             Numeracy

 

National 5 Lifeskills Maths

Senior Phase - Higher/Advanced Higher

 

In their fifth and sixth year students can choose to further develop and deepen their knowledge by studying initially at Higher level and then at Advanced Higher level.

 

Higher Maths

 

The purpose of the Higher Maths course is to develop critical and logical thinking skills. To achieve a good pass at this course perseverance and resilience are more important attribute than raw talent. Obtaining a pass at Higher level Maths opens up so many more opportunities for pupils 

 

Higher Maths is divided into three units:

 

1.             Expressions and Functions

2.             Relationships and Calculus

3.             Applications

 

At Higher level, students will need to pass three unit assessments in order to sit the exam. The final grade for Higher Maths is dependant entirely on the exam performance. It is recommended students achieve an A/B pass at Higher level to allow progress to Advanced Higher level in their sixth year.
